Los árboles que esconden al bosque: Miguel Ángel de Quevedo y los orígenes de la ciencia forestal en México

El presente artículo trata sobre el papel del ingeniero civil Miguel Ángel de Quevedo (1862-1946) en los orígenes de la ciencia forestal en México. El hilo conductor será determinar si las críticas de varios de sus contemporáneos a su proyecto sobre la atención preferente al árbol en lugar del bosque tenían o no fundamento. Se pondrá especial acento en los primeros encuentros entre el Estado y la ciencia forestal, en la configuración de las ideas forestales que sirvieron de guía para su desarrollo y, finalmente, en la formación de personal facultativo. Las principales fuentes de trabajo son los textos publicados por el mismo Quevedo. La conclusión es que el proyecto del ingeniero estuvo efectivamente más orientado hacia el árbol en lugar del bosque, sobre todo después de la Revolución mexicana. No obstante, a pesar de su marcada inclinación conservacionista, de sus carencias conceptuales, su escaso legado científico en matería silvícola y su franca inclinación hacia la hidrología forestal, es innegable que Quevedo fue el responsable de introducir y convertir la ciencia forestal en un asunto de Estado en México. Ante el peso sociopolítico de lo agrícola y de una deforestación endémica, no se puede considerar un aporte menor.This article describes the role of civil engineer Miguel Ángel de Quevedo (1862-1946) in the origins of forestry in Mexico. The guiding issue is to determine whether the critiques of some of his contemporaries regarding his project, which prioritised attention to the tree rather than the forest, were well-founded. Particular emphasis will be placed on the first encounters between the state and forestry, the development of ideas that guided the growth of forestry and the training of forestry workers. The principal sources are the texts published by Quevedo himself. The author concludes that Quevedo’s project favoured the tree over the forest, especially after Mexican revolution. However, despite his conceptual shortcomings, his scant scientific legacy in silvicultural matters, his insistence on forest hydrology and his strong conservationist inclinations, Quevedo was undeniably responsible for introducing forestry science to Mexico and making it a state concern. Given the endemic deforestation and the socio-political weight of agriculture in Mexico, this cannot be considered a minor contribution

Los Caecilii Metelli. Una familia al servicio de la res publica romana

Los Caecilii Metelli fueron una importante familia que estuvo durante gran parte del periodo republicano a cargo de los puestos más altos de sus cursus honorum, desempeñando por tanto un papel clave en el devenir de los acontecimientos internos de Roma y en sus proyecciones exteriores. El presente trabajo de fin de grado, en su primera parte hace una aproximación breve a los orígenes de los Caecilii Metelli, tanto desde una perspectiva mítica como desde una perspectiva bibliográfica para después tratar la vida política de los miembros masculinos más destacados de la República desde las magistraturas que desempeñaron, abarcando desde sus inicios en el siglo III a. C. hasta mediados del siglo I a. C. a lo largo de sus exitosas campañas militares y su participación dentro de los debates políticos de Roma. Por último, se desarrolla una visión socio-económica de la familia, desde sus círculos sociales más inmediatos entre los que debieron aliarse o enemistarse, hasta sus fuentes de riqueza principales.The Caecilii Metelli were an important family that was in charge of the higher posts of his cursus honorum practically during all the Roman Republic period, playing therefore a key role in the evolution of the internal events in Rome and in their external projections. This end-of-degree project, in its first part makes a brief approach to the origins of the Caecilii Metelli, from a mythical perspective and a from a bibliographical to then treat the political life of the leading male members during the Republic from their magistratures played, ranging from its beginning in the third century until the middle of the first century BC through his successful military campaigns and their participation in the political discussions in Rome. Electricity clustering framework for automatic classification of customer loads

Clustering in energy markets is a top topic with high significance on expert and intelligent systems. The main impact of is paper is the proposal of a new clustering framework for the automatic classification of electricity customers’ loads. An automatic selection of the clustering classification algorithm is also highlighted. Finally, new customers can be assigned to a predefined set of clusters in the classificationphase. The computation time of the proposed framework is less than that of previous classification tech- niques, which enables the processing of a complete electric company sample in a matter of minutes on a personal computer. The high accuracy of the predicted classification results verifies the performance of the clustering technique. Resistencia a la compresion de mortero con cemento sustituido al 7% y 10% por mucilago de aloe vera (sabila)

El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la resistencia a la compresión del mortero al sustituir mucilago de Aloe vera (Sábila) en un 7% y 10%, estudio que se realizó en la ciudad de Chimbote en el año 2017, utilizando agregado de la cantera Rubén. La Sábila fue traída desde el pueblo de Vinzos y el cemento portland tipo I de la ciudad de Chimbote donde se desarrolló el proyecto, con la finalidad de encontrar alternativas de materiales para ser aplicados en el campo de la ingeniería civil. Esta investigación trató sobre la sustitución del cemento en el mortero, en primer lugar, se estudió los materiales que lo componen, luego las propiedades del mortero de cemento- arena con dosificaciones según lo menciona la norma técnica peruana 334.051 (2013), seguido se realizaron las probetas de mortero de mucilago de sábila-cemento-agregado. Se determinó que la combinación de mucilago de sábila al 7% y 10% obtuvo resistencias inferiores en 11.30% y 21.50% con respecto al mortero patrón a los 28 días, demostrando que la nueva combinación no puede ser usada en obras de construcción.Tesi

El higienista Manuel Pizarro Jiménez (1821-1892) y su discurso doctrinal "de la prostitución y de su influencia en las costumbres, en la moralidad y en la salud pública" (1870)

El presente artículo es una aproximación al problema de la prostitución en la España de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Se aporta el texto del «discurso doctrinal» que sirvió al higienista sevillano Manuel Pizarro Jiménez (1821-1892) para obtener su segundo doctorado en medicina y se discute su posición ante la prostitución —un abolicionista defensor de la regeneración recompensada— a la luz de sus condicionamientos sociales y personales. Se aporta un inventario crítico de su producción impresa, así como diversos documentos en relación con este doctorado.The present paper aims to be an approach to the problem of prostitution during the second half of the 19th century in Spain. We provide a text by the Sevillian hygienist, Manuel Pizarro Jiménez (1821-1892), on his «discurso doctrinal» to obtain his second doctorate in Medicine. Likewise, we discuss his attitude towards prostitution, as far as he was an abolitionist and defender of the rewarded reformation in light of his own social and personal conditions. Performance analysis of acoustic emission hit detection methods using time features

Acoustic emission (AE) analysis is a powerful potential characterisation method forfracture mechanism analysis during metallic specimen testing. Nevertheless, identifying and extracting each event when analysing the raw signal remains a major challenge. Typically, AEdetection is carried out using a thresholding approach. However, thoughextensively applied, this approach presents some critical limitationsdue to overlapping transients,differences in strength and low signal-to-noise ratio.To address these limitations, advancedmethodologies for detecting AE hits have been developedin the literature. The most prominently used are instantaneous amplitude, the short-termaverage to long-term average ratio,the Akaike information criterionandwaveletanalysis, each of which exhibits satisfactory performance and easeof implementationfordiverseapplications. However, their pronenessto errors in the presence of non-cyclostationary AEwavefrontsand the lack of thoroughcomparison for transient AE signalsare constraints to the wider application of these methodsin non-destructive testing procedures.In this studywith the aim of make aware about the drawbacks of the traditionalthreshold approach, a comprehensiveanalysis ofits limiting factorswhentaking in regard the AE waveformbehaviouris presented.Additionallyin a second section, a performance analysis of the main advanced representative-methods in the field is carried out throughacommon comparative framework, by analysing first, AE waves generated from a standardisedHsu-Nielsen testand second, adata frame of a highly active signal derivedfrom a tensile test.With the aim to quantify the performance with which theseAE detection methodologies work, for the first time in literature, time features as the endpoint and duration accuracies, as well as statistical metricsas accuracy, precisionand false detection rates, are studied.Postprint (author's final draft

Random Generation of Arbitrary Waveforms for Emulating Three-Phase Systems

This paper describes an apparatus for generating a signal representative of steady-state and transient disturbances in three-phase waveforms of an ac electrical system as described in IEEE Std 1159-09. It can be configured as a synthesizer of randomly distorted signals for different applications: for testing the effects of disturbed grid on equipment and to generate patterns of electrical disturbances for the training of artificial neural networks, which are used for measuring power quality tasks. Analysis of the problems and educational needs of new family structures

. El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer cuales son las preocupaciones y demandas de apoyo de familias correspondientes a diversas estructuras familiares. Se entrevistaron a 214 familias pertenecientes a 6 diferentes estructuras familiares. Los resultados muestran que las familias se preocupan por la salud de sus hijos y demandan criterios educativos para afrontar el proceso de crianza. Las familias monoparentales y reconstituidas inciden en el hecho de que sus hijos han vivido procesos de conflicto. Las familias adoptivas muestran preocupación por la normalidad del desarrollo psicológico de sus hijos y demandan formación de apoyo a la adopción. Las familias homoparentales resaltan la estigmatización social que puedan sufrir sus hijos. Las familias de partos múltiples señalan la elevada necesidad de recursos humanos, educativos y económicos que requiere la crianza de sus hijos. Los datos obtenidos ponen de manifiesto la necesidad del desarrollo de políticas educativas y preventivas dirigidas a las familias.The aim of this study is to identify the concerns and support needs of several family groups corresponding to different family structures. 214 families, matching 6 different family structures, were interviewed. The results show that families are worried about their children’s health and that educational criteria are required to deal with the child-rearing process. Single and step families are worried about the fact that their children have been through processes of conflict. Adoptive families have worry about the normal psychological development of their children and require specific training to deal with the adoption process. Gay and lesbian families are concerned about the social stigma that may fall on their children. Multiple-birth families are worried about the high level of human, educational and economic resources needed to raise their children. Results highlight the need to develop educational and preventive policies aimed at families

Heptamethine cyanine dyes in the design of photoactive carbon nanomaterials

Near-infrared (NIR) absorbing nanomaterials, built from anionic heptamethine cyanine dyes and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) or few layer graphene (FLG), are presented. The covalent linkage, by using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions, results in nanoconjugates that synchronize the properties of both materials as demonstrated by the thoughtful characterization study carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). UV-Vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopies further confirmed the unique electronic structure of the novel photoactive nanomaterials
